Final Posting: University of Granada Wikipedia article

The University of Granada was a stub article which made it difficult to edit because you can only add and not change anything about it. I had studied at the University of Granada last Spring and thought that I could add something. The stub article mentioned nothing about the school where foreign students take classes, the Center for Modern Languages. I added this information to the site and it is still there. The next couple of edits were adding links to the External Links Section. I added the web page of the Center for Modern Language. The third edit was a little change in the wording of one link. My fourth edit was a little better because I did some searching. I found out that the University was actually founded by the Moors 200 years before Kind Carlos V had supposedly founded it. I added that to the article today and don't' know if it will stay.

Final Posting: Seville, Spain Wikipedia article

I was most proud of my Seville, Spain edits. Out of the four Wikipedia article, I feel as though I added more valuable knowledge to this one. The first edit I made was regarding the Torre Del Oro, a look out tower that is still around today. I added the interesting fact that when the Torre Del Oro was built, they built the stairwell with ramps instead of steps so that cattle and horses to go up and down the tower in order to bring the watchmen food, etc. My second and third edits were simply punctuation corrections but I made up for that with my fourth edit. I was very surprised to see that people had forgotten to add the very famous author, Jose Zorrilla, to the list of famous people from Seville, Spain. Zorrilla, by the way, is the man who wrote the world renowned "Don Juan" novel. I'm sad to note, however, that my edit regarding the Torre del Oro is no longer there.

Final Posting: AAU Wikipedia Article

At first I had no idea how to edit a "Stubbed" article. This means that you can't change it, you can only add to it. So that's what I decided to do. In the "External Links" sections I added the official webpage to the following Amateur Athletic Union sports: Baseball, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, and Soccer. It's not a lot, but it enhanced the page. It's information that was relevant and belonged on the page. Hopefully other members will see what I put up, and will add to it themselves. Isn't that the point?

Final Posting: Scituate, Ma Wikipedia Article

When I first saw the wikipedia article for my hometown, Scituate, MA., it was already a highly established page. I read over the whole article and thought that I had nothing to add. After thinking about it, and re-reading the article, ideas came to mind.
The first thing I noticed was that the famous nieces of President John Adams were not on the list of "Famous Scituate Residents". The girls names were Rebbecca and Abigail Adams. I added that these girls fended off the British army with music. This was definitely my most meaningful edit for the article. My second edit was adding the fact that Jim Longbord played for the redsox. My third edit was the fact that Abigail and Rebbecca Adams were near the Lighthouse when they fended off the British. Finally, my fourth edit was merely adding the word "only" to better clarify that two high schools were all boys and all girls respectively.

Univesity of Granada Wiki edit #4

FOR MY FOURTH AND FINAL WIKIPEDIA EDIT OF THIS CLASS I DECIDED TO DO SOMETHING EXTRA SPECIAL.....I added that the University of Granada was first founded by the moors in 1349. The article had said that it was founded in the 1500's by Emperor Carlos V. This is partly true, but the whole truth is that the Moors first started the University.

Univesity of Granada Wiki edit #3

For my third edit of the University of Granada article I changed the name of the external link to "official site of University of Granada". The external link was initially named "official site", but I decided to add "of University of Granada" so it would be more clearly understood which official site one might be surfing to. I didn't do it as a necessity, I did it as a courtesy.

Univesity of Granada Wiki edit #2

I added a link to the homepage of the Center of Modern languages school that is part of the University of Granada.

Seville Wiki Edit #4

For my fourth and final Seville, Spain wiki edit I added the author Jose Zorrilla under the "famous people born in Seville" section. Zorrilla was the auther of the famous Don Juan Novel.

Seville Wiki Edit #3

For my third Seville, Spain edit I changed a comma into a parenthesis in the Flamenco section. because it was grammatically correct to do so.

Seville Wiki Edit #2

I added to Comma in the third sentence of the section entitled "Seville and the Port".

Scituate Wiki Article Edit #4

For my fourth and final Scituate, MA edit I added that B.C. High and Notre Damn Highschools are boys "only" and girls "only". I added the "only" because I believed it helped clarify the article. Check it out

Scituate Wiki Article Edit #3

For my third Scituate, MA edit, I added that Rebbecca and Abigail adams fended off the British with music NEAR THE SCITUATE LIGHTHOUSE. This is a very key element because the lighthouse is famour for being the the Adam girls' residence. Check it out

Scituate Wiki Article Edit #2

For my second Scituate, MA Wiki edit I added that Jim Longborg was not only a winning pitcher, but a winning REDSOX Pitcher. Check it out

Wiki AAU #4

For my fourth AAU Wiki article edit I added the official AAU Soccer Webpage.

Wiki AAU #3

for my third AAU Wiki edit I added the Girl AAU Basketball webpage.

Wiki AAU #2

For my second AAU sports wiki article I added the AAU Boys basketball homepage

Cullenoscopy Blog: Required Blog Commentary #1: "Sony Blackballs Blog Over PS3 Rumor"

In Sean's article: Required Blog Commentary #1: "Sony Blackballs Blog Over PS3 Rumor" , Sean discusses what happens when some big shot company tries to censor the web: they don't succeed. What happened is that Sony was upset because some gaming blog, Kotaku, published an article about how Sony's PS3 has some functionality issues. Sony asked the blog not to publish the article, but Kotaku did anyways.
Sony Replied:

"So, it is for this reason, that we will be canceling all further interviews for Kotaku staff at GDC and will be dis-inviting you to our media event next Tuesday. Until we can find a way to work better together, information provided to your site will only be that found in the public forum. Again, I take absolutely no joy in sending you this note, but given the situation you have put me into, I have no choice. - Dave Karraker, Sr. Director.

Sony's Threat, however, did not last long. According to Sean's article, a bunch of Blog bonded together and protested Sony. This, in turn, forced Sony to apologize and thus lost them the battle.

Sophia's blog: Global Neighbourhoods

In Sophia's article "Blogosphere comment #5: Global Neighbourhoods", Sophia discussed and successfully demonstrated how to put a picture into an individual blog post. Well done Sophia. She went on to comment about how it is nice to be able to actually see what people are blogging about. Her article has a beautiful picture of a small pueblo town in Mexico called "Cancun". She says her time there was more about having fun and not so much about the site seeing, but I'm sure it was more of an even balance then she really remembers. I'm glad she had a great trip.

In Class Material: The Network Effect

The Network effect, in one word, is totally cool. The more who have it, the better it is? There's not a lot of that in today's world. In today's world, the more who have it or use it, the less cool it is. But online, the law of physics does not apply, up is down, black is white, the more who use it, the better it is.
In effect, the network effect is the name giving to something that gets better with the more people who use it. Examples of such programs is myspace, skype, facebook, etc. The way it works is best explained using the fax example. A fax, by itself, is useless. However, when someone has another fax, the usefulness of the first fax rises, and continues to rise as the number of fax users rises. Same goes for myspace...the more myspace users, the more useful myspace is.
This is the Network effect.

In Class Material: Advertising Programs

We had a very interesting the other week in regards to advertising programs and search engine optimization. As it turns out, affiliate programs help with search engine optimization due to the created inbound links. Examples of such affiliate programs is adwords or amazon's affiliate program. Also interesting to note is that affiliate programs are word-of-mouth advertising platforms that have an economic incentive. Those who use it, get paid on a cost per action business model. The general question then arises, what can you do to enhance your search engine optimization?

1. As a business, you need to know what are your relevant keywords?
2. Wibsites will be multiple pages, so match EACH page and optimative it four a couple keywords
3. Title tags: put keywords in the title tags
4. Use appropriate body text.
5. Add keywords in the metatags.
6. Have a lot of inbound links.
7. Anchor text of inbound links.

There you have it, go get em' tiger.

Number 1 Search term for 10 Catagories

There was an article posted on ClickZ that listed the Top 10 Search Terms for 10 Catagories.
This is a list of the number one search term for each Catagory:

1. IT and Internet: Paypal
2. Automotive Manufacturers: Toyota
3. Movies: IMDB
4. Internet Adverstising: Unclaimed Money
5. Food and Beverage Brands and Manufacturers: Pizza Hut
6. Pharmaceutical and Medical Products: Lexapro
7. Blogs and Personal Websites: Myspace
8. Broadcast Media: CNN
9. Shopping Rewards and Directories: Consumer Reports
10. Travel Destinations and Accommodations: Hotels.com

What does this mean? It means that everysingle company whose name, product or service is on the above list is doing amazing advertising or is so part of everybodies everyday life that they don't need to advertise. Hotels.com, for instance, should be applauded for being the number one searched word in its catagory. CNN, meanwhile, is CNN...the most viewed TV station for news in the United States and it is no suprise they'd be number one.

Microsoft to buy Aquantive

According to the article, "Microsoft will acquire ad company aquantive", Microsoft is planning to buy Aquantive in order to keep up with rivals yahoo and google on the online advertisment game. Microsoft believes this move will greatly enhance their online advertising platform and help them take a competitive advantage against some of their rivals. Microsoft knows, however, that they cannot compete with Google's dominating acquistion of Doubleclick.

Microsoft is to pay $66.50 per share for the buy out, around $6 billion in total and about 85% more than aQuantive's closing price yesturday.

Price Point of Free--Class Discussion

In class we discussed advertising supported websites like google and skype. I was already familiar with the fact that we can use these websites products and services for free because they receive their income from advertisers. What I was not aware of was the idea of "free now, pay later with lock-in". What this is essentially, is that a company will give you its basic service for free, but if you like the service enough and want the more sophisticated version with more capabilities, you have to pay for it. A good example of this is Skype, which is a company that services VOIP technology. Skype lets you do the basic computer to computer calling for free. However, If you want more advanced technology like allowing someone from England to call your computer (but without the long-distance calling) you would need to buy the more advanced version of the product.

Free now, Pay later with Lock-in: Brilliant idea. I think this is a great way for companies to market their products.

Wiki Edit: Amateur Athletic Union

In the wikipedia article: Amateur Athletic Union, I added the official AAU baseball webpage to the external links section. Let's hope they keep it there.

Amazon.com Price Discrimination--Class Discussion

Amazon.com is under a lot of fire for using price discrimination with its new users. It has been accused of offering lower prices for it's products to customers who are new to the site. This "trick" was found out when long-time and loyal customers erased their third-party cookies and went to amazon.com to find that they were offered lower prices for, say, DVD's than they were a few minutes earlier when amazon had known they were not new customers.

Do I think this is terrible? No. Do I think this is deceiving? Sort of. Will Amazon get in trouble? No. Did this work for Amazon? Probably. Should Amazon been for upfront about what they were doing: No, because if they did it wouldn't have worked because everyone would be erasing their third-party cookies every time they went to buy something from Amazon.com and therefor defeat the whole purpose of the promotion.

From TV Ads To YouTube Anarchy

In Modern Marketing's blog "From TV Ads to YouTube Anarchy" the question is posed as to why and how Video 2.0 is exploding and what stuff explodes and what stuff implodes? Why is it that a professionaly done video starring a half-naked kate moss gets less viewers than a giggling baby? As of right now there are no definitive answers. There are, however, researchers like Colin Donald over at Futurescape, who are trying to answer these questions about the world of video-focused, social networking sites.

What causes these things to be popular I have no idea. I can see how a giggling baby is cute to look at while a commerical starring Kate Moss is lame because it is a commercial. However, with the emergence of video 2.0 marketers should really focus on what TYPES of commerical formats work for the online surfer. It needs to be interesting, informative, captivating, and something else. That "something else" is what needs to be explored futher.

Search: No results equals no Sale

In the ClickZ article "Search: No results equals no Sale", Jack Aronson makes a compelling case as to why the majority of companies should try to better their "no results" page that arises when a customer queries something using their search engine. Prudential and Hoovers.com both have no results page that simply say "Your search did not match any documents" or "No results found. Please go back and refine your search". These no result pages are bad for two reasons. First, It blames the consumer for not being able to ask for the right thing and secondly, it's a "dead end" page with no links to other possible "places" in the company where the answer could be found.

According to the article, another good practice when running a search engine on your companies website is to also have a results page with multiple elements; it should be a "fully merchandised page", with lists of other things to buy or other places to go. All in all, the results page should be thought of as a personal web page that keeps the consumer on the computer and doesn't force him to leave your website and go to another company.

Wiki Edit: Scituate, MA

In the Scituate article under "Notable residents"I added Rebecca and Abigail Adams. These girls were nieces of the President John Adams. During the revolutionary war, the girls used their flutes to fool the British into thinking that the american army was near by, therfore making the British retreat. It is a passionate story filled with love, honor and bravery.
I also made a gramatical edit by Capitalizing "residents" in the Notable Residents section.

Wiki Edit: Sevilla

The the Sevilla artice under the "Sights" section I added a fact about the "Torre del Oro". I added that is was built with ramps instead of steps so that cattle and horses to go up and down the tower.

Wiki Edit: University of Granada

I have edited the "stub" article University of Granada. I added that The University of Granada is home to "The Modern Language Center" which hosts foreign students from all over the world.

Why Blog?

Blogging is the new wave of marketing. If you don't blog, you're behind. Blogging is a revolutionary tool that is changing how companies market themselves. Blogging allows consumers from anywhere on the globe (sort of) to talk to eachother about products or services from a certain company. Because of this, companies now have to listen and RESPOND to what customers are saying about their product/service. Also, to stay on top of the game, companies now have to start their own blogs to respond to consumers questions/compaints/praise and to build consumer confidence. Blog, blogger, blob.
