From TV Ads To YouTube Anarchy

In Modern Marketing's blog "From TV Ads to YouTube Anarchy" the question is posed as to why and how Video 2.0 is exploding and what stuff explodes and what stuff implodes? Why is it that a professionaly done video starring a half-naked kate moss gets less viewers than a giggling baby? As of right now there are no definitive answers. There are, however, researchers like Colin Donald over at Futurescape, who are trying to answer these questions about the world of video-focused, social networking sites.

What causes these things to be popular I have no idea. I can see how a giggling baby is cute to look at while a commerical starring Kate Moss is lame because it is a commercial. However, with the emergence of video 2.0 marketers should really focus on what TYPES of commerical formats work for the online surfer. It needs to be interesting, informative, captivating, and something else. That "something else" is what needs to be explored futher.

This positing is really interesting to me too. Last week, everyone was talking about the youtube video in which Will Ferrell argues with a 2 year-old girl posing as a landlord demanding her money. The last I heard, the video had over 20 million hits. It's amazing to me that people can become so famous, just by coming up with a quirky idea. A few months ago, a young 20-something girl was on Jay Lenno merely because Youtube had made her famous. I still don't understand what the fascination was with her, even after watching her Youtube videos.
