Price Point of Free--Class Discussion

In class we discussed advertising supported websites like google and skype. I was already familiar with the fact that we can use these websites products and services for free because they receive their income from advertisers. What I was not aware of was the idea of "free now, pay later with lock-in". What this is essentially, is that a company will give you its basic service for free, but if you like the service enough and want the more sophisticated version with more capabilities, you have to pay for it. A good example of this is Skype, which is a company that services VOIP technology. Skype lets you do the basic computer to computer calling for free. However, If you want more advanced technology like allowing someone from England to call your computer (but without the long-distance calling) you would need to buy the more advanced version of the product.

Free now, Pay later with Lock-in: Brilliant idea. I think this is a great way for companies to market their products.

Wiki Edit: Amateur Athletic Union

In the wikipedia article: Amateur Athletic Union, I added the official AAU baseball webpage to the external links section. Let's hope they keep it there.

Amazon.com Price Discrimination--Class Discussion

Amazon.com is under a lot of fire for using price discrimination with its new users. It has been accused of offering lower prices for it's products to customers who are new to the site. This "trick" was found out when long-time and loyal customers erased their third-party cookies and went to amazon.com to find that they were offered lower prices for, say, DVD's than they were a few minutes earlier when amazon had known they were not new customers.

Do I think this is terrible? No. Do I think this is deceiving? Sort of. Will Amazon get in trouble? No. Did this work for Amazon? Probably. Should Amazon been for upfront about what they were doing: No, because if they did it wouldn't have worked because everyone would be erasing their third-party cookies every time they went to buy something from Amazon.com and therefor defeat the whole purpose of the promotion.

From TV Ads To YouTube Anarchy

In Modern Marketing's blog "From TV Ads to YouTube Anarchy" the question is posed as to why and how Video 2.0 is exploding and what stuff explodes and what stuff implodes? Why is it that a professionaly done video starring a half-naked kate moss gets less viewers than a giggling baby? As of right now there are no definitive answers. There are, however, researchers like Colin Donald over at Futurescape, who are trying to answer these questions about the world of video-focused, social networking sites.

What causes these things to be popular I have no idea. I can see how a giggling baby is cute to look at while a commerical starring Kate Moss is lame because it is a commercial. However, with the emergence of video 2.0 marketers should really focus on what TYPES of commerical formats work for the online surfer. It needs to be interesting, informative, captivating, and something else. That "something else" is what needs to be explored futher.

Search: No results equals no Sale

In the ClickZ article "Search: No results equals no Sale", Jack Aronson makes a compelling case as to why the majority of companies should try to better their "no results" page that arises when a customer queries something using their search engine. Prudential and Hoovers.com both have no results page that simply say "Your search did not match any documents" or "No results found. Please go back and refine your search". These no result pages are bad for two reasons. First, It blames the consumer for not being able to ask for the right thing and secondly, it's a "dead end" page with no links to other possible "places" in the company where the answer could be found.

According to the article, another good practice when running a search engine on your companies website is to also have a results page with multiple elements; it should be a "fully merchandised page", with lists of other things to buy or other places to go. All in all, the results page should be thought of as a personal web page that keeps the consumer on the computer and doesn't force him to leave your website and go to another company.

Wiki Edit: Scituate, MA

In the Scituate article under "Notable residents"I added Rebecca and Abigail Adams. These girls were nieces of the President John Adams. During the revolutionary war, the girls used their flutes to fool the British into thinking that the american army was near by, therfore making the British retreat. It is a passionate story filled with love, honor and bravery.
I also made a gramatical edit by Capitalizing "residents" in the Notable Residents section.

Wiki Edit: Sevilla

The the Sevilla artice under the "Sights" section I added a fact about the "Torre del Oro". I added that is was built with ramps instead of steps so that cattle and horses to go up and down the tower.

Wiki Edit: University of Granada

I have edited the "stub" article University of Granada. I added that The University of Granada is home to "The Modern Language Center" which hosts foreign students from all over the world.
